How to talk to your teenager without losing them
Erika Craus
There are moments when a parent looks at their child and wonders: "When did they stop talking to me?"
The child who once came to tell us everything may suddenly close their bedroom door, answer with only a few words or seem as though they no longer need us.
And yet, very often, it does not mean they no longer need us. It means they are growing.
During adolescence, the need for independence meets the need for safety. This is where parents face something difficult: learning how to stay close without intruding.
Not every conversation needs to end with advice. Sometimes the most important thing we can say is: "I'm listening."
Because behind an "leave me alone" there may still be a child who needs to know that, when they turn around, we will be there.
